Most older teens make using mouthwash a\u00a0part of their dental regimen. When should\u00a0younger kids<\/a>\u00a0start using oral rinses? How do you select the most effective product? This month’s blog helps to answer these questions.<\/p>\n

Getting Your Kids to Use Mouthwash<\/h3>\n

Children under 6 should only take mouthwash with a dentist’s recommendation and parental supervision. Preteens between the ages of 6 and 12 may use oral rinses\u00a0while supervised\u00a0to make sure that they do not swallow the mouthwash by mistake.<\/p>\n

Young children\u00a0should avoid mouthwashes with fluoride. Although fluoride\u00a0prevents\u00a0tooth decay in older children, it can cause fluorosis–a\u00a0disorder\u00a0that damages the enamel and discolors younger teeth.<\/p>\n

Not All Rinses Are Identical<\/h3>\n

Before selecting a mouthwash for younger family members, you should know the difference between\u00a0cosmetic<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0therapeutic\u00a0<\/em>rinses, as well as the purpose of\u00a0pre-brush<\/em>\u00a0versus\u00a0post-brush<\/em>\u00a0rinses.<\/p>\n

Cosmetic<\/em>\u00a0rinses give teeth a “clean” feeling and curb bad breath.\u00a0Therapeutic\u00a0<\/em>rinses treat plaque, kill bacteria, and help to prevent gingivitis.<\/p>\n

Pre-brush<\/em>\u00a0rinses have gentle formulas and leave colorful marks on the teeth to show kids where they should focus on brushing. After brushing on those spots, the colors go away.\u00a0Post-brush\u00a0<\/em>rinses have stronger formulas that fight plaque and cavities and also work against bad breath.<\/p>\n

Rinses for younger children come in flavors that kids enjoy, such as berry or bubble gum. They usually do not contain\u00a0alcohol.<\/p>\n

Things I Should Consider When Selecting a Mouthwash<\/h3>\n
